Early Life and Education

Akosua Afriyie-Kumi, also known as the African Print Designer, was born in Ghana. She grew up in a small town called Akwatia, where she spent a large portion of her childhood playing with her friends outdoors in the rural farmland. She was always interested in the arts from a very young age, so this was one of the main reasons she pursued a career in the fashion industry. Akosua graduated from the University of Ghana with a degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. After her graduation, she moved to Toronto, Canada to pursue her master’s degree in Fashion Merchandising.

Professional Career

Professional Career Akosua began her career as a buyer for a fashion company in Ghana. She was later promoted to the position of sales and marketing manager after working there for almost five years. Akosua was later hired as a marketing executive for a fashion company in Canada. Her job was to promote their brand through various platforms including social media. Akosua left the company and began her own blog called Fashionable. She wanted to help promote fashion designers from around the globe and showcase their work. Her blog was a huge success and was featured in many publications including BBC Africa and CNN. Her blog also raised money for African charities. Akosua later created a clothing brand called AKAFA, which means “to tie” in the Akan language. Her brand is known for its African print clothing and has been featured in many magazines and websites. Akosua’s most recent ventures include a fashion brand called KitENDER and a new Fashionable website. Akosua’s advice for women in Africa is to be who they are and don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. She says that women should not try to copy the western world but instead let their African culture shine. Women should not be afraid of who they are and should be loud and proud. Akosua says that in order to be successful, women need to work hard, believe in themselves, and never be afraid to speak up. Women in Africa should also be proud of their heritage and not try to imitate other cultures.
